How to Rank in ChatGPT and AI Search: Why Your Website Matters in the AI Era

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews build their answers from websites. Here is how they pick which businesses to name, and a practical checklist to make your site easy for AI to understand and recommend.
Why Your Website Matters in the AI Era: How to Build a Website for AI Search That ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Agents Recommend

If you want to know how to rank in ChatGPT and other AI search tools, start with your website. A good website for AI search is one that clearly states what you do, where you do it, what it costs and why people trust you, in plain text that machines can read. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews build their answers by searching the web and summarising what they find. If your website gives them clear, consistent facts, you are far more likely to be named when a customer asks “who is the best HVAC company near me?”

There is no secret trick or paid placement. It comes down to the same things that win customers: clarity, completeness, speed and proof. This guide explains how AI tools choose businesses and what you can do about it.

Key takeaways
  • AI assistants mostly recommend businesses they can find and verify on the open web: your website, your Google Business Profile, review sites and mentions elsewhere.
  • Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Normal SEO basics still apply.
  • Clear service pages, real prices or price ranges, service areas and reviews give AI something concrete to repeat.
  • Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) are mostly good SEO and good writing under a new name. Be wary of anyone selling shortcuts.

Why does your website matter more in the AI era?

The way people look for businesses is changing quickly. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found that 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6% the year before. The same survey found 82% read AI-generated review summaries.

At the same time, Google is answering more questions on the results page. A 2025 Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords found that when an AI Overview appeared, the click rate for the top result was about 34.5% lower than expected. Pew Research Center saw a similar pattern in real browsing: people clicked a regular link on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without.

Put those together and the picture is clear. More of the first impression happens inside an AI answer. Your website still feeds that answer, and it still has to close the sale when someone clicks. If you are wondering whether websites still matter at all, see why your website matters more in 2027.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews choose which businesses to recommend?

None of these companies publish a full formula, so be careful with anyone who claims to know it exactly. What we do know comes from their own documentation and from independent studies.

1. They search the web first

For questions about current, local or specific things, AI assistants usually run a web search and read the pages that come back. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search. AI Mode also runs several related searches at once (Google calls this “query fan-out”) to find more supporting pages.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content from partners, and its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. If your site blocks that crawler, OpenAI says it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

2. They look for facts they can repeat with confidence

An AI answer is a summary. It can only summarise what is written down. A page that says “We install, repair and service central air and heat pumps in Plano, Frisco and Allen, with same-day repair calls from $89” gives the AI specific, quotable facts. A page that says “Your comfort is our passion” gives it nothing.

3. They cross-check other sources

AI tools also pull from business listings, review sites and articles that mention you. Google says keeping your Business Profile information current can help your services show up in AI responses. Independent tests disagree on exactly which directories ChatGPT leans on most, and it seems to change over time, so the safe move is to keep your details accurate everywhere, not to chase one listing site.

4. Brands that get talked about get mentioned more

An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (May 2025) found that the number of times a brand was mentioned across the web had the strongest link to appearing in AI Overviews, stronger than branded links or branded search volume. This is a correlation, not proof of cause, but it fits common sense: businesses that customers, suppliers and local news talk about are easier for AI to trust.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization are new names for making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand and quote. You will also see “AI search optimization” or “LLM SEO”.

Here is the honest part. Google published an official guide to generative AI search in 2026, and it says many popular GEO tactics are not needed for Google. It lists these as things you do not need to do:

  • Create llms.txt files or other special “AI” markup.
  • Break your content into tiny chunks for AI.
  • Rewrite your pages specially for AI systems.
  • Chase fake or paid “mentions”.
  • Over-focus on structured data (it is still useful for rich results, but not required for AI answers).

That guidance covers Google only. Other AI tools may behave differently, but the core idea holds across all of them: clear, helpful, accurate pages win.

What matters Classic SEO AI search (GEO / AEO)
Being crawled and indexed Essential Essential (AI tools can only use pages they can reach)
Clear service and location pages Helps you rank for each service Gives AI specific facts to quote
Prices or price ranges Helps conversions Lets AI answer “how much” questions with your numbers
Reviews and mentions Helps local rankings Helps AI trust and name you
Fast, mobile friendly pages Part of page experience Matters when the customer clicks through to check you
Structured data (schema) Rich results eligibility Helpful context, but not required by Google
llms.txt Not used A proposed convention; Google ignores it

How to rank in ChatGPT and get recommended: a practical checklist

There is no way to pay ChatGPT to recommend you, and no guarantee it will. What you can do is make your business the easiest one to describe accurately. Work through this list.

Make your website easy to read

  • One page per service. “Roof repair”, “roof replacement” and “storm damage inspection” should each have their own page, not share one paragraph.
  • Name your service areas. List the towns and regions you cover in plain text. For key areas, write a genuine page with local details, not a copy-paste page with the town name swapped.
  • Publish prices or ranges. Even “Most bathroom remodels run $12,000 to $25,000” helps. People ask AI “how much does X cost near me”, and the AI can only use numbers it can find.
  • Answer common questions on the page. Turnaround time, warranty, financing, emergency call-outs, minimum order size. Write the question as a heading and answer it directly underneath.
  • Keep facts in text. Hours, phone, licences and service lists should not be hidden inside images, sliders or PDF menus.

Make your business easy to verify

  • Use the exact same business name, address or service area, and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp and trade directories.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete: categories, services, hours and photos.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews regularly, and reply to them. BrightLocal’s 2026 review survey found that 89% of consumers expect owners to respond to reviews.
  • Earn real mentions: local news, supplier “find an installer” pages, trade associations, sponsorships.

Make sure AI crawlers can reach you

  • Check that your robots.txt file does not block Googlebot or OAI-SearchBot. Some security plugins and hosting firewalls block bots by default.
  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and fix any indexing errors. If your pages are not on Google at all, start with why your website is not showing up on Google.
  • Add basic LocalBusiness structured data that matches what the page actually says.

Make the click worth it

  • Fast pages on mobile, with a tap-to-call button and a short quote form.
  • Real project photos and case details. Do not use stock photos of work you did not do.

How to show up in AI Overviews

Google is clear that there is no separate sign-up or code for AI Overviews. To appear as a supporting link, your page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Google Search. Google’s AI features page lists the basics: allow crawling, use internal links, offer a good page experience, keep important content in text, support it with good images, and make sure any structured data matches the visible page.

For local businesses, the map pack is still a big part of “near me” results, and AI Overviews tend to show up most on general questions such as “how often should I service my AC?”. So a strong Google Business Profile plus a clear website is still the winning combination. Our guide to local SEO for contractors covers the map side.

Where do AI agents fit in?

The next step is AI that does not just recommend, but acts. OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent (launched July 2025) can browse websites and fill in forms for a user. Google started rolling out agentic restaurant reservations in AI Mode in August 2025 for AI Ultra subscribers in the US, and said local service appointments would follow.

These features are still early and mostly limited to paid plans. But they point in one direction: an agent will visit your site, look for prices, availability and a way to book or request a quote, and move on if it cannot find them. We go deeper in is your website ready for AI agents.

Do you need a new website for AI search?

Not always. If your site is already fast, has separate service pages and lists your areas and prices, you may only need better content and a tidy-up of your listings. That is work you can do yourself over a few weekends using the checklist above.

A rebuild makes sense when your site is one long page, runs on an old template that is slow on phones, hides key information in images, or is so hard to edit that you never update it. In that case a website redesign fixes the structure that AI tools and customers both depend on. Our Business Website package (from $1,250, up to 12 pages) includes service pages, booking or quote forms, speed work and schema, built on custom WordPress.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Make sure ChatGPT’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can reach your site, then publish clear pages for each service, your service areas, price ranges and common questions. Keep your details consistent on Google, Bing, Yelp and trade directories, collect reviews, and earn real mentions. There is no paid placement and no guarantee.

What is a website for AI search?

It is a website that AI tools can easily crawl, understand and quote. That means plain text facts about your services, locations, prices, hours and credentials, organised into clear pages, fast to load, and consistent with your listings elsewhere.

Is generative engine optimization different from SEO?

Mostly no. Google’s 2026 guidance says its AI features run on the same core ranking and quality systems as Search, and that SEO best practices still apply. GEO adds a stronger focus on clear, quotable facts and on being mentioned across the web.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says you do not need llms.txt, special AI files or special schema to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard structured data is still useful for rich results, and llms.txt is a proposed convention that some site owners choose to add, but Google Search ignores it.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews answers?

Not in the organic answer. You can run ads on Google, but the AI-written answer itself is not something you can buy your way into. The best approach is accurate, helpful content and a strong reputation.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

There is no fixed timeline. Changes to robots.txt can be picked up by OpenAI in about a day, according to its documentation, but being chosen in answers depends on your content, reviews and mentions, which build over months.
